by on Apr.30, 2013 @ 8:56 am, under NPB

Yomiuri Giants

The pitching staff gave up eleven runs in Monday's game against Chunichi.  It was the first time they gave up ten or more runs in a game since losing 10-7 to Yakult on September 3, 2011.  The last time they gave up eleven or more runs was when they were handed a 12-8 loss by Yakult on August 31, 2010.

Chunichi Dragons

Hector Luna recorded his forty hit in the month of April on Monday.  The franchise record of forty-two hits in one month is held by Michio Nishizawa (August 1954) and Morimichi Takagi (August 1964).  Luna has a chance to tie or break the record today.

With fifteen multi-hit games this month, Luna is also one away from tying the CL record.

Yakult Swallows

Wladimir Balentien hit three home runs in Monday's game against Yokohama (1st inning, 2nd inning, and 8th inning).  Two of the three went out of the stadium.  Security guards outside Yokohama stadium warned passersby when Balentien got up to bat in the 8th.

Balentien has hit three homers in a game four times in his NPB career: vs Yokohama on May 13, 2011; vs Yokohama on May 1, 2012; vs Chunichi on July 4, 2012; and vs Yokohama on April 29, 2013.  That is good for a seven-way tie for third on the all-time list.  First place belongs to Ralph Bryant with eight and Sadaharu Oh sits in second with five.  He joined Bryant as the only players in NPB history to go yard three times in one game at least once in three consecutive seasons (Bryant recorded two in 1988, four in 1989, and one in 1990).  He is also the third player to record three three-homer games against one team.  The other two: Bryant against Nippon Ham 1988, 1989, and 1993; and Akira Eto against Yokohama in 1994, 1998, and 1999.

In addition to Balentien, Cecil Fielder (August 13, 1989) and Leo Gomez (May 17, 2000) have hit two baseballs out of Yokohama Stadium in one game.
