1st round draft pick Shohei Otani was lifted from his Ni-gun start against Yomiuri on Tuesday because he was bleeding from his right middle fingernail (it was not a cracked/broken fingernail).

Ten of the nineteen pitches Otani threw on Tuesday were called balls.  Seventeen of the nineteen pitches were fastballs.

Pitching coach Tadashi Sugimoto wants Kishi and Hideaki Wakui to be more involved in pitch selections during their starts.

"They are leaving it up to others.  They are just following the signals.  It is important they tell the catchers what they are thinking.  They need to think about how they want to pitch," said Sugimoto.

Softbank Hawks

Brian Falkenborg is the closer.  However, when he is not available, the Hawks will likely go to Kodai Sengu (currently the team's 8th inning pitcher).

Orix Buffaloes

The media recently learned that Takahiro Mahara (inflammation in the right subclavius) started playing catch about a week ago (he is now throwing the ball at a distance of about seventy meters).  He participated in Ni-gun workouts on Tuesday.

"I just need to wait until the tingling goes away.  After that, things should move quickly.  I am prepared [for the next step].  I am at more than fifty percent compared to when I suffered the injury," said Mahara.
