Yakult Swallows: Masahiko Tanaka fractures left collarbone in collision play at home plate

by on May.12, 2013 @ 11:19 pm, under NPB

Masahiko Tanaka (Yakult) was involved in a collision play at home plate while playing defense in the 4th inning (Matt Murton tried to tag up from third on a fly ball to center) against the Hanshin Tigers.  He remained in the game for his at bat in the bottom of the inning, but was removed on defense in the top of the 5th.  He was later diagnosed with a fracture in his left collarbone.

Junji Ogawa was not happy about the play and the Swallows will reportedly bring it up during a CL meeting on Monday.

Murton spoke to reporters and said, "I was not trying to hurt someone with that play.  I did what I could to score a run and tried that for the first time.  I can only hope that he is ok."

It should be noted that Swallows' pitcher Ryosuke Yagi threw at Murton during his next at bat in the 6th inning (the pitch went behind him, down at about hip level).

If you block the plate as a catcher you’re going to get trucked every time; Tanaka knew that and took the risk. A shame he got hurt, but that’s baseball.
