by on May.16, 2013 @ 11:29 pm, under NPB

Seibu Lions

Kazuhisa Makita is listed as a right-handed hitter.  During Wednesday's game, he swung the bat from the left-side in the 2nd (strikeout swinging) and 4th inning (strikeout looking) and switched to his right in the 6th (strikeout looking).

He was listed as a switch-hitter through the summer of his second year of high school.  He then focused on batting left-handed.  He did not get many opportunities to hit while playing at Heisei Kokusai University and for Nippon Tsuun (Industrial League) because of the DH-rule.  When he joined Seibu, he stuck to swinging the bat from the right side (to protect his right hand), until Wednesday.

According to Makita, he has an easier time hitting the ball from the left side.

The arm-flapping the players do when they get a big hit will be called the Win Win.

Aarom Baldiris, Dae-Ho Lee, and Vinny Rottino all went yard on Wednesday.  It was the eleventh time in NPB history -- first since Alex Cabrera, Tuffy Rhodes, and Jose Fernandez for Orix on August 12, 2009 -- that three foreign players on the same team hit home runs in the same game.  It was also just the third time in NPB history that three foreign players batting in the three, four, and five holes hit home runs in the same game.  The other two: Jim Baumer, Tony Roig, and Francis Agcaoili for Nishitetsu on April 24, 1965; and the trio of Cabrera, Rhodes, and Fernandez in 2009.
