1st round draft pick Shohei Otani is the seventh rookie pitcher drafted out of high school in franchise history, since the start of the draft, to record a victory in his first year.  He also became just the second rookie player drafted out of high school in NPB history to log time as both a pitcher and position player and record a victory, all in his first year.  The other was Kikuo Tokunaga in 1951.  Of the two, Otani is the only one that started games as both a position player and a pitcher.

Hideki Kuriyama thought about taking Otani out in the 4th inning on Saturday, but the coaches convinced him to leave him in the game.

Kuriyama is still trying to determine if Otani might be better served pitching on more days of rest or playing in fewer games as a position player.

Otani has reached the requirements to make the All-Star ballot as a position player (at least ten games or at least twenty plate appearances) and a pitcher (at least five games or at least ten innings).  As of Saturday: position player - 18 G, 48 PA; pitcher - 2 G, 10 IP.
