The NPB announced today that they are opening an umpire school. Sessions will cost 85,000 yen and take place between December 18 and 23 at Lotte Urawa Stadium. Students that do well will have an opportunity to attend umpire tryouts during fall training camp. Justin Klemm (Executive Director, Professional Baseball Umpire Corp) is also scheduled to teach.
The NPB will have openings for fifty to sixty students. Methods on how to apply will be posted at a later date.
The NPB held an executive committee meeting today in Tokyo. A number of issues were discussed, including (but not limited to):
- the length of the Inter-league schedule. A decision could not be reached during the meeting. Discussions will continue with a committee made up of officials from both leagues. The same committee will also be in charge of Samurai Japan.
- the Phoenix League schedule. The fall league will take place between October 7 and 28.
- the average length of a nine inning game this season is about three hours and fifteen minutes. The average has increased and the NPB is planning to ask teams to get coaches and players to push harder for shorter games.
