[7/2/2013] Mazda All-Star Game 2013 News and Notes

All-Star news and notes from July 2 and June 28:

  • Tatsunori Hara selected sixteen players for the CL roster; Hideki Kuriyama seventeen players for the PL roster.  There will be ten first-timers on the CL roster and twelve on the PL roster.  The Yomiuri Giants and Hanshin Tigers will each send seven players to the All-Star Series; Nippon Ham will send nine.  Five rookies made the CL roster; one rookie made the PL roster.  Six rookies on the All-Star roster ties the NPB high set in 1956 (Noboru Akiyama, Kiyoshi Doi, Atsushi Otsu, Tetsuya Yoneda, Shinya Sasaki, and Akira Osawa).  Five rookies from one league (CL or PL) sets a new NPB high.  Source: Sponichi 7/2/2013
  • Tomoyuki Sugano (YOM) could start Game 2 of the series.  Yasuhiro Ogawa (YAK) and Shintaro Fujinami (HAN) could follow in relief (in that order).  Kazuki Mishima (YOK) and Taichi Ishiyama (YAK) could also end up pitching in Game 2.  Source: Nikkan Sports 7/2/2013, Daily Sports 7/2/2013, Sponichi 7/2/2013
  • The Swallows will be the fifth team in NPB history to send two rookies to the All-Star Series.  The other four: Taiyo in 1956 (Noboru Akiyama, Kiyoshi Doi), Hanshin in 1972 (Katsuhiro Nakamura, Mitsuru Mochizuki), Yomiuri in 1999 (Koji Uehara, Tomohiro Nioka), and Rakuten in 2007 (Masahiro Tanaka, Motohiro Shima).  Source: Sports Hochi 7/2/2013
  • Mishima will be the first Yokohama rookie to make the All-Star roster since Daisuke Yamashita in 1974.  Source: Daily Sports 7/2/2013
  • Fujinami will be the first Hanshin rookie drafted out of high school to make the All-Star roster since Yutaka Enatsu in 1967.  Source: Daily Sports 7/2/2013

  • The Game 1 outfield for the Pacific League will most likely be Yoshio Itoi (ORI), Dai-Kang Yoh (HAM), and Sho Nakata (HAM).  Yoh is planning to do some sort of performance for the fans that involves Itoi and Nakata.  Source: Sponichi 6/28/2013
