On Wednesday, 1st round draft pick Shohei Otani became the first player drafted out of high school in franchise history to hit a home run in his first year since Yukio Tanaka in 1986.  He also became the first player in franchise history to record at least one home run and one victory in his first year since Toshiaki Moriyasu in 1966 (one home run and eleven victories).  Tsutomu Iwamoto, the last non-rookie player in franchise history to record at least one home run and one victory in a season, won two games and hit one home run in 2005.

Otani is the eleventh pitcher out of high school in NPB history to record at least one home run and one victory in his first year, first since Yutaka Enatsu in 1967.  Of those eleven pitchers, only Otani recorded his home run as a position player.
