Osaka police arrested twenty-three-year-old Takuto Honda (23) on suspicions of theft on Wednesday.
According to police reports, at around 12:10pm on June 15 this year, Honda, while riding a motorcycle, snatched a purse out of a bicycle basket that belonged to an unemployed sixty-seven-year-old woman (she was on her way home when the incident took place). The purse contained about 25,000 yen in cash.
Honda has reportedly admitted to the theft and told police he needed money to pay for living expenses. Police are checking to see if he might be involved in other similar cases.
This was not actually the first time Honda was arrested for purse-snatching. He was arrested for similar reasons in 2011.
Honda made a name for himself by pitching against Masahiro Tanaka as a first year student at Kyoto Gaidai Nishi High School during the 2005 Summer Koshien Finals. He also spent some time playing for the Akashi Red Soldiers (Independent League).
UPDATE 10/12 @ 4:19am -
The Osaka district court handed out sentence of two years and eight months (reduced from the recommended four years). The sentence was backdated to October 1.
According to the ruling, Honda snatched a bag containing tens of thousands of yen from a woman while riding a motorbike in March. He committed a similar crime in June.
