The media learned on Wednesday that a baseball team director at Kashiwa Nittai High School, a twenty-seven-year-old male teacher, turned to physical punishment (struck a first-year player in the face with his hand) for discipline. The director has since been replaced.
According to the high school, the punishment took place in late-May last year. The then first-year player did not sustain any physical injuries. The former director reportedly told the school he resorted to physical punishment because the player was not taking practices seriously. The player's parents notified the school of the incident earlier this month.
The then first-player was also physically punished by the teacher/manager between April and June last year. The teacher was suspended for three months.
The school has already filed a report with the Chiba High School Baseball Federation and decided not to withdraw from the Summer Koshien Chiba Qualifier Tournament because they felt their players should not be penalized for something they were not responsible for.
