Nippon Ham Fighters

The Fighters are being extremely careful with Shohei Otani.  So much so that in January, they created a rule where the rookie is required to for permission from team officials if he wants to go out on a private excursion.  He recently broke the rule when Sho Nakata invited him out to dinner after Game 3 of the All-Star Series and he failed to get permission to go.  Otani was issued a stern warning from Hideki Kuriyama.

"I scolded [Otani].  We talked about the rules on going out and fully clarified things. ... He was invited and probably was not intending [to go out, but I told him he needs to understand what it will take to [be a pitcher and position player].  He has a responsibility to make sure he is in good condition.  I told him he would create a lot of problems if something were to happen to him," said Kuriyama to reporters on Wednesday.

Katsuya Nomura has done a 180 on Otani.  Speaking at a press event for his newest book, he told reporters the rookie had great potential and should be considered an important asset for Japanese baseball.

"When I watch [Otani] pitch and hit, it makes me want to let him do both. ... He is a good prospect.  He has enough potential to be up there with ON (Sadaharu Oh and Shigeo Nagashima).  He is an asset.  I hope they bring him up properly," said Nomura.

Through Wednesday, with runners in scoring position, Otani is 11-for-25 with thirteen RBI.

Otani was left out of the starting line-up tonight to focus on his workouts as a pitcher.  He threw sixty-one pitches in the bullpen in preparation for his next start.

It’s just amazing what a prisoner Otani is in Japan. What a ridiculous culture.
Gen, I know you don’t have the courage to post this but what they’re doing with Otani is wrong. He is an adult and should be able to do what he wants. If the team doesn’t like it, too bad. Release him then. Let him enjoy life abroad.

You know paparazzi are out there trying to find any hint of scandal, don’t you? He just turned 19. Abroad? I don’t think he even has a driver’s license.

as stated above, he is still a minor. he was invited out with a group of older guys, had any photo surfaced of otani with alcohol or cigarettes anywhere near him it would cause a lot of problems for him. they are thinking carefully about the situations he is in, not keeping him prisoner
