The NPB is considering a move to have future NPB commissioner terms begin on January 1 or February 1. Current commissioner Ryozo Kato began his term when he was appointed during an owner meeting in July and will officially end on July 11, 2014. To avoid confusion, the league feels it might be best to avoid changing commissioners mid-season.
The NPB also feels there is a need to synchronize the terms for the NPB commissioner and chairman of the NPB. Both positions are held by the same person, but currently begin on different dates.
