Yakult Swallows

The NY Times is carrying a piece on Wladimir Balentien's run to break the NPB's single-season home run record.

Hanshin Tigers

Blaine Boyer told reporters on Friday he was demoted after he said he could not pitch a second inning of relief during a game against Yokohama on the 4th.

"I felt tired after pitching the one inning.  When I told the coaches, they said I should go to Ni-gun.  I was also worried about getting hurt.  I had pitched in nine of twelve games [after I was called up]," said Boyer.

Actually no – Japanese pitching coaches and managers will burn out a pitcher’s arm pretty quick if allowed to. Many have no ability to see beyond their own immediate concerns and don’t care about pitchers particularly foreign pitchers. The latter are just a tool to be utilized as the coach or manager feels like. Part of the reason why Scott Atchison didn’t return to Tigers was the over-pitching during the season.
