Hitoki Iwase pitched in his fiftieth game of the year on Tuesday.  He has now appeared in fifty or more games in all fifteen seasons of his career.

Hanshin Tigers

Sponichi figures Shintaro Fujinami will get a huge raise for his second year, in the same neighborhood as Masahiro Tanaka (salary went from fifteen million to sixty million in his second year) or Daisuke Matsuzaka (from thirteen million to seventy million), perhaps even more, if he continues to win and the team makes it to the Climax Series.

Fujinami has also helped the team draw more fans this year: the average at Koshien is 41,280, but on days the rookie pitches, attendance jumps to 45,933.

The Tigers could give Fujinami some extra work out of the bullpen if they feel it might help him win the Rookie of the Year Award.

Yokohama Bay Stars

Kiyoshi Nakahata was a little shocked that Yomiuri Giant Shuichi Murata bunted during a game against Hanshin on the 8th.

"He won the MVP of the Month two months in a row.  You think the fans want to see that?  They do not want to see Shinnosuke [Abe] or [Shuichi] Murata bunt," said Nakahata.  "My [run producers] bunt?  If I am going to do that, I will send a pinch-hitter.  No way.  If they ground into a double play, then so be it.  You have to do the things that your opponent does not like.  If you bunt, you get them thinking how lucky they are."

He then backed off a bit and said, "But it is one way of playing baseball.  The bunt was 120% the right thing to do to win.  I keep talking about winning so maybe I should just do it too."
