[9/13/2013] Yakult Swallows: Wladimir Balentien News and Notes

Balentien's mother was at Thursday's game.  Some quotes.

My son is like a diamond.  I am surprised at how many home runs he has hit, but I am happy.  I heard many people cheering for Coco.

I would like him to hit one tomorrow.  I will make him a home cooked meal and be back here again tomorrow.

Balentien usually gets about ten hours of sleep.  He could not get that much sleep after he hit number fifty-five on Wednesday because he was replying to e-mails he received from people congratulating him on tying the home run record and because he had to wake up at 7:00am on Thursday morning to get to Narita Airport in time to pick-up his mother.

Balentien's mother missed number fifty-five by one day and jokingly asked her son why he could not wait a day.  She is slated to stay in Japan until the end of the season.

Three staff members from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands were at Thursday's nights game in support of Balentien.

"Sadaharu Oh's record stood for close to half a century.  Breaking a record like that would be a great accomplishment.  It would be something we would be proud of.  We are looking forward to it," said Hans Kuijpers (Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency).

"This is a good opportunity to let others know more about the Netherlands.  We would like to invite [Balentien] to the embassy after he breaks the record to celebrate," said Hisako Minakoshi (senior project manager).

Thursday night's opposing pitcher, Yusuke Nomura (Hiroshima), told reporters that he was pleased to experience the atmosphere of pitching to Balentien with number fifty-six on the line.

Tonight's starting pitcher, Jason Standridge (Hanshin), on facing Balentien:

He has no chance.  I think I will aim for his neck when he steps into the batter's box.  Just kidding.  He is having a great season and I am sure he will break the record, but I do not want him to break it tomorrow.  I want to make this a season where I do not give up any home runs to him.
