[9/17/2013] Kyodo News photographer lied about home run photos

by on Sep.18, 2013 @ 1:40 am, under NPB

Kyodo News announced on Tuesday that between last year and this year, photos that were purported to be shots of home runs taken at three NPB games were actually swapped with photos taken during a different at bat.  The photos were swapped because the photographer failed to capture the actual home runs.

The three games are from last year and this year: Luis Terrero - Rakuten vs Hanshin on May 19, 2012; Shunichi Nemoto - Lotter vs Orix on September 4, 2012; and Tony Blanco - Yokohama vs Hanshin on July 14, 2013.

The photographer told Kyodo during an internal investigation that, "I missed the home run shot and it was my mistake and I could not tell anyone about it.  I did not seriously consider the consequences of shifting photos from another set to cover the gaps."

The news agency first noticed a discrepancy in the photo data and earlier this month began checking past photos.  They noticed incorrect time stamps on the home run photos and found out they were from a different set.

"This is not something that can be forgiven, coming from a news agency that is supposed to report the truth.  We apologize [for this incident].  We take this seriously and will investigate past materials.  We have firmly dealt with those involved and will take measures to ensure this does not happen again," said Yuji Nakaya, Kyodo News Bureau Chief.
