Nippon Ham Fighters

The media learned Yuki Saito is slated to get an Ichi-gun start against Orix at Sapporo Dome on October 2.  He is also scheduled to toss a couple of innings in a Ni-gun game against Yokohama on the 27th in preparation for his first Ichi-gun game of the year.

Through six Ni-gun games, Saito went 1-3 with a 9.43 ERA.

Shohei Otani slid head-first into first base in the 9th inning of Monday's game against the Rakuten Eagles.  He was later given a stern warning by coaches that were concerned about potential injury.

"I did it without thinking.  I was focused on getting at least one run," Otani said to reporters of the decision to slide headfirst into first.

Hideki Kuriyama on the play: "He is a professional.  It would pose a problem if he got hurt.  I will not let him do it again.  He will be given a stern warning."

Kuriyama also acknowledged he could feel just how badly the rookie wanted to put a run on the board.

Shinya Tsuruoka earned his domestic FA option in July and may exercise it to see what kind of offers he can get on the market.  He does like playing for the Fighters and will likely listen to what they have to say.  However, with the younger catchers getting more playing time, Tsuruoka may opt to find a team where he has a better chance to win an everyday job.

Rakuten Eagles

Sho Miyagawa joined Tetsuya Yamaguchi, Hiroki Yamada, Yuki Kuniyoshi, and Yuji Nishino as the only former Ikusei players in NPB history to record a win as a starter.  Of the five, only Nishino and Miyagawa recorded victories in their first career starts.

Kazuo Matsui, Kazuya Fujita, and Motohiro Shima got the day off on Monday.  Casey McGehee got the start at DH and Andruw Jones took over at first.  The moves were made to give some of the everyday players a rest and provide younger players with pennant race experience.  Jones got the start at first since that might be where he will end up playing if the team makes it to the Nippon Series.

The team is preparing a place for the Eagles to celebrate when/if they clinch first.  They have secured about 5,000 bottles of beer for the festivities.  They will also setup a section (things like carbonated water) for Yoshinoa Kamata -- he is underage and does not turn twenty until October 26.
