[10/9/2013] Central League Climax Series: The Called Game Rule

by on Oct.09, 2013 @ 1:27 pm, under NPB

I forgot to mention this yesterday, but the Central League added a new Climax Series rule that involves calling games after a series winner is decided.

Games will be called in following circumstances, if the home team is considered the series winner:

  • the game is still tied after the completion of the top of the 12th.
  • the home team manages to tie the game in the bottom of the 12th.

Using current CL teams, this is one situation where I think this rule would kick in:
Hiroshima wins game 1. Hanshin wins game 2. Game 3, score still tied after the completion of the top of the 12th. Game is called because Hanshin had the better winning percentage during the regular season and will win the series based on the rule 2nd place team breaks all ties (in the Final Stage, the rules becomes 1st place team breaks all ties).

It is basically the same as if Hanshin wins game 1 and game 2 ends in a tie. There is no need for a game 3 since regardless of outcome, Hanshin advances since they had the better record during the season.

Such a situation occured in the 2011 final stage between Softbank and Seibu. Seibu, down 3-0 in the series were eliminated after failing to score in the top of the 12th but had to take the field.

In the middle of the 12th, Matsunaka jumped out the dugout in joy only to realize he was all alone in the area between the dugout and the foul line.
