Toshiya Sugiuchi threw sixty-six pitches in the bullpen at Giants Stadium on Thursday.  He is scheduled to start a Phoenix League game against Orix on the 12th.

Sugiuchi was scratched from his last regular season start on the 8th against Yakult because of conditioning issues.

Hanshin Tigers

The Tigers had Randy Messenger, Atsushi Nomi, and Shintaro Fujinami do similar training routines when in front of the media on Wednesday -- they played catch at the same time, went to the bullpen at the same time, and did their running at the same time.

Fujinami plans to change the way he approaches his starts during the post-season -- instead of worrying about what comes next, he will pitch in the moment and go with everything he has.

Hiroshima Carp

The Carp played a practice game against Industrial League JFE Nishi Nihon on Thursday.  Brad Eldred and Yoshiyuki Ishihara hit solo homers in the 2nd inning.  Eldred got the start in left and batted sixth.  He cranked out a second home run in the 6th.

Yusuke Nomura started the game and gave up two runs on seven hits over four innings of work.

The Carp were initially planning to send players to the Phoenix League but opted to hold workouts at Mazda Stadium because of poor weather conditions in Miyazaki.

The Carp could use Ko Shimozuru against left-handed pitchers.  He could stand in for someone like Brad Eldred when Atsushi Nomi gets a start -- Eldred is 1-for-18 with twelve strikeouts against Nomi over his career.

Rakuten Eagles

Satoshi Nagai started a Phoenix League game on Wednesday and gave up one run over five innings of work.  He topped out at 142km/h and gave up four hits, including a two-out solo home run in the 1st.  He and Takashi Kawai are a candidates to start Game 5 of the Final Stage of the Climax Series.

The Eagles will likely go with a five-man rotation.  Masahiro Tanaka, Takahiro Norimoto, and Wataru Karashima will most likely take the first three spots.

Since the entire team seems to do so well when Tanaka pitches, Senichi Hoshino jokingly told reporters everyone on the team should change their name to Tanaka.

Seibu Lions
