Rakuten Eagles

Motohiro Shima is scheduled to earn his domestic FA option next season.  According to Tokyo Sports, the Eagles are concerned the Chunichi Dragons may already be setting their sights on Shima as the catcher to replace Motonobu Tanishige.

Shima is from Gifu and attended Chukyo Daigaku Fuzoku Chukyo High School in Aichi.  He grew up as a Dragons' fans.

While Shima has developed fairly strong ties to the Tohoku region, there is a chance he will exercise his option to see what the market can bear.  If that happens, the Dragons are expected to pursue the catcher.

According to Tokyo Sports, Dae-Ho Lee may have set a lower limit of 800 million yen over two years.

Lee's camp arrived at 800 million yen by adding 100 million yen to their current two-year contract, which is estimated to be about 700 million yen (200 million yen signing bonus and 250 million yen per year).

The Buffaloes were thinking 700 million yen by adding 200 million to the current two-year contract, minus the signing bonus.

Dae Ho Lee asking for at least 800 million yen over two seasons makes sense to me. He’s now got two ardent suitors in Orix and the Softbank Hawks. The Hawks have money they are willing to spend, and Orix reportedly wants to put a good team on the field in 2014 to celebrate Orix’ 50th year corporate anniversary. Lee has also made noise about wanting to play in the United States, but I think that’s mostly to increase the amount NPB teams are willing to offer him.
