Pitching coach Tomohiro Kuroki feels Shohei Otani had an acceptable season because he managed to maintain his spot in the rotation over the course of the season, even though it may have been on seven or more days of rest.

The Fighters are hoping Otani can play a larger role in the rotation next season by giving him regular starts on six days of rest.  He could also be selected to get the opening day start.  That would make him the third player out of high school in franchise history to get an opening day in his second year.  The other two: Toshiaki Moriyasu in 1967 and Hiroshi Tsuno in 1985.  Only one player out of high school in franchise history has managed to make an opening day start in his first year: Noboru Makino.
