[10/18/2013] Chunichi Dragons, Yakult Swallows, Hanshin Tigers, Yokohama Bay Stars

Chunichi Dragons

The Dragons announced that Ryoji Nakata had surgery to clean out his right elbow on Thursday.  He will begin his rehab on the 19th and should be able to start playing catch in two to three months.

Yakult Swallows

Kyohei Muranaka was removed from fall practices due to tightness in his left shoulder.  He will join the rehab group working out at the Ni-gun facilities in Toda, Saitama.  It is uncertain if he will be able to participate in fall camp.

Hanshin Tigers

Ryoma Matsuda gave up two runs on three hits over one inning of work during a Phoenix League game against Doosan on Thursday.  He faced seven batters and threw twenty-two pitches.  Of the twenty-two pitches he threw, eight were off-speed pitches, four of them were slow (110km/h range) curves.

Matsuda is in the process of working on his off-speed pitches.

Shintaro Fujinami will begin a strengthening program this winter with the hopes of increasing his weight from his current eighty-six kilograms to about ninety.

The Tigers are telling reporters that Naoto Nishida was re-assigned to workouts at Naruohama because they want him to focus on strengthening exercises.  However, the real reason apparently has something to do with him breaking a team rule.

INF/base-running coach Teruyoshi Kuji cleared out his locker on Thursday.  He also spoke to reporters about stepping down and said, "This is not about stepping down to take responsibility.  Do I need a reason to quit?"

Daily Sports notes that Kuji, along with Japanese coaches Eiji Ochiai and Kazuki Inoue, will be participating in the winter league in Taiwan as special part-time coaches for the Taiwanese teams.  Each of the three coaches will take turns spending about a week working with the teams between late-November and mid-December.
