2013 draft news and notes:

  • Breakdown of the draft.  By level: twenty-four high school players, twenty-one university players, twenty-nine Industrial League players, and two others.   By position: forty-six pitchers, eleven catchers, fifteen infielders, four outfielders. [Sanspo 10/25/2013]
  • 130 members of the media from fifty-seven media companies covered Yuki Matsui's press conference on Thursday.  Rakuten scouts Isao Fukuda and Masahiko Goseki visited Matsui and presented him with the winning selection card that also contained a short message (Do not let your dreams end in a dream) from Senichi Hoshino.  [Daily Sports 10/25/2013]
  • Nippon Ham's Hideki Kuriyama became the second person in draft history to miss three consecutive drawings.  The other was Akinobu Okada in 2010.  [Daily Sports 10/25/2013] ... Kuriyama wore Yuki Matsui's high school team colors (dark blue suit with a dark red tie) for luck.  [Sports Hochi 10/25/2013]
  • Nippon Ham's 6th round draft pick Akihiro Hakumura has show potential over his high school and university years.  However, teams may have stayed away from him because of his attitude.
  • Softbank met 2nd round draft pick Yuito Mori today.  [Nikkan Sports 10/25/2013]
  • Lotte's 1st round draft pick Ayumu Ishikawa grew up a Chunichi fan.  He did not have a preference when it came down to the two teams (Yomiuri and Lotte) that selected him in the first round.  [Tokyo Sports 10/25/2013] ... A number of team officials visited Ishikawa on Thursday and presented him with an autograph board from Tsutomu Ito and the winning selection card (Let us work hard as we shoot for a championship together!).  Ito told reporters he tried not to use his right hand (the hand with which he drew the winning selection card) as much as possible from Thursday morning because he did not want any luck to rub off.  [Sports Hochi 10/25/2013] ...   • Lotte met 2nd round draft pick Yuta Yoshida at Rissho University today.  They gave Yoshida an autograph board with Ito's autograph.  [Nikkan Sports 10/25/2013]
  • Orix's Hiroshi Moriwaki was surprised no one else selected Kazumasa Yoshida in the 1st round.  For luck, he wore a red tie and red underpants.  [Sports Hochi 10/25/2013]
  • Third year players on the Hokusho High School baseball team celebrated Yuto Yoshida's (Orix 5th round draft pick) draft selection with a cake and wallet.  [Sports Hochi 10/25/2013]
  • Rakuten visited Iwadeyama High School to meet 9th round draft pick Ryuta Konno today. [Nikkan Sports 10/25/2013]
  • Yakult officials met with 1st round draft pick Toshihiro Sugiura at Kokugakuin University's Yokohama campus.  They offered him the number eighteen.  [Sponichi 10/25/2013]
  • Yokohama's Kiyoshi Nakahata met 1st round draft pick Yuta Kakita at the Nihon Seimei clubhouse in Osaka.  The two spoke for about thrity-five minutes.  [Sponichi 10/25/2013]
  • A number of Chunichi officials visited Seirei Christopher High School today to meet 1st round pick Shota Suzuki.  Suzuki received about 500 congratulatory e-mails in one day.  [Sponichi 10/25/2013]
  • Hiroshima thought about drafting Daichi Osera out of high school, but his high school manager turned them down because he already had plans to attend Kyushu Kyoritsu University.  [Sports Hochi 10/25/2013] ... Both Osera and Kei Tamura (the person that drew the winning selection card) wore red underpants for good luck.  [Sponichi 10/25/2013]
  • Kenjiro Nomura met 2nd round draft pick Allen Kuri after the draft at Asia University on Thursday.  [Nikkan Sports 10/25/2013]
  • Hiroshima officials met 4th round draft pick Keita Nishihara at Nichidai today.  [Daily Sports 10/25/2013]
  • Hanshin's Yutaka Wada immediately traveled to Yokohama after the draft to meet 1st round draft pick Yuta Iwasada at Yokohama Shoka University.  He presented Iwasada with the winning selection card (Surpass Nomi as a pitcher!  We have high expectations for you.)  [Sports Hochi 10/25/2013]
  • Hanshin 5th round draft pick Shoya Yamamoto had partially given up on the draft and was playing a game on his mobile phone when he heard his name called.  [Sanspo 10/25/2013]
  • University players can be drafted without submitting a letter of intent IF they formally withdraw from their university's baseball team before the day of the draft.  The NPB could not confirm Shota Nagae's status when he was Giants selected him in the 2nd round of the Ikusei draft on Thursday because of the time of day (it was after 7:00pm).  If his papers were properly filed, then Yomiuri will retain their right to sit down with him.  However, if the papers were not properly filed, they will lose the pick.  [ZakZak 10/25/2013] ... The NPB was able to confirm Nagae's status today and found that he had filed the necessary paperwork.  [Sponichi 10/25/2013]
