The Shoriki Matsutaro Award selection committee met in Tokyo today and named Rakuten Eagle manager Senichi Hoshino as their recipient this year. Masahiro Tanaka was chosen to receive a Special Honor Award for his undefeated 24-0 season. Tanaka is the second player in the award's history to receive special considerations, first since Ichiro in 2004.
Yakult Swallow Wladimir Balentien was also up for consideration, but the committee ultimately decided to give the main award to Hoshino with the special honor going to Tanaka.
The selection committee is made up of four people: former players Sadaharu Oh, Shigeru Sugishita, Futoshi Nakanishi, and baseball journalist Masao Taguchi.
