Tomoyuki Sugano is working on two kinds of forkballs -- one that he throws between 137 to 140 kilometers an hour and looks like a splitter and another in the low- to mid-130s.  He saw his numbers improve when he started throwing more forkballs toward the end of the season.

Jun Hirose feels next year may be his last if he does not have a good season.

"[Brad] Eldred will probably be in left, I will probably be competing with players like [Yoshihiro] Maru, [Ryuhei] Matsuyama, and [Takahiro] Iwamoto.  [Masato] Akamatsu and [Yuichiro] Mukae are also around.  All of them will be my rivals," Hirose said.

Carp official Kiyoaki Suzuki told reporters on Thursday that if they select a player as part of compensation for losing Kan Otake to the Yomiuri Giants via free agency, they plan to take a player that is of similar value.  They will also most likely focus on players that can help the team right away.

Hanshin Tigers

Four members of the 2013 draft class -- pitchers 1st round draft pick Yuta Iwasada, 5th round draft pick Shoya Yamamoto, and 6th round draft pick Suguru Iwasaki and catcher 4th round draft pick Ryutaro Umeno -- will receive training tips/advice from team trainers on the 15th.  The suggestions will be based on results from the physical fitness tests they took on the 8th.

Training advice for the other two players -- 2nd round draft pick Shintaro Yokota and 3rd round draft pick Naomasa Yokawa -- will be passed on to them through the scouts that were in charge of them.

The Tigers are scheduled to play a practice game against the Samsung Lions (KBO) on February 14, according to reports out of Korea.  Seung Hwan Oh could make his debut during the game.  However, Oh told reporters on Thursday that he likes to take his time when preparing his body for the season (he offered to make adjustments to his training schedule, but the coaching staff told him it was ok for him prepare at his own pace) and he may not be ready to pitch.  Daily Sports believes Oh may not pitch in a game until March.

Shintaro Fujinami on the Majors: "It is the top of the peak.  The only way I can even begin talking about it is if I can get to a point in my career where I have accomplished enough to say that Japanese baseball is no longer any fun."
