Yomiuri Giants

The Giants were expecting up to thirty players to attend the championship trip to Hawaii.  Only about fifteen ended up going on the trip.  A number of the everyday players, like Hayato Sakamoto, Hisayoshi Chono, Tetsuya Utsumi, and Toshiya Sugiuchi, decided to skip the trip for various personal reasons, like to focus on their training or to spend time with their families/relatives.

1st round draft pick Seiji Kobayashi is from a family of swimmers -- his father competed at the Kokutai when he was eighteen, his mother is an instructor that once gave Hanshin's Shintaro Fujinami tips on how to swim, and his two sisters swam through to high school.  His father tried to make Kobayashi a swimmer as well, but he veered from the course and told his parents when he was in his sixth year of elementary school that he wanted to play baseball.  Kobayashi credits his strong arm and elbow to all the swimming he did when he was a child.
