Masahiro Tanaka made an appearance on a sports news show (TBS S1 @ 12:30am on 12/23) and spoke about his motivation for the 2014 season.
"I do not look for motivation to play. I do my best to win games one at a time, that is where my motivation comes from. I will be fine so long as I can pitch."

Incidentally, the show asked viewers if they wanted Tanaka to head to the Majors or stay with the Eagles. The poll is probably not all that accurate, so it may not make too much sense to read into it, but for those interested, the final results were apparently 14,672 for the Majors and 22,464 for the Eagles. FWIW: public sentiment seems to have shifted a bit after the limit on fees was introduced.
Katsuya Nomura spoke to the media about his thoughts on Tanaka heading to the Majors (the two will be appearing in a holiday special later this month). Some of Nomura's quotes:
In thinking about Ma-kun's feelings, I would like to see him go, but in thinking about pro yakyu, I would like to see him stay. The best develop the best. If the best pitchers leave, then [good] hitters will not develop.

Honestly, I am fifty-fifty. I would like to see him go, but if I think about [Japanese] yakyu, then I want him to stick around. They say the best develop the best. If the best pitcher leaves, then good hitters will not develop.
Regardless, next year could end up being the year Ma-kun has to show what he is worth. If he goes to the United States, then he may not be able to attend my funeral. That is why I asked him for an autographed baseball.
