2nd round draft pick Shintaro Yokota is using two kinds of bats right now: a Yoshio Itoi model bat and an Ichiro Suzuki model bat.  He plans to use the Itoi bat during games (large sweet spot, best fit) and the Ichiro bat during practices (small sweet spot).

Yokota started off with the Ichiro bat, but struggled to adjust.  The scout in charge of him suggested he try an Itoi bat.  The Itoi bat was easier to use with the larger sweet spot, but broke sooner after the off-season began.  He went back to using the Ichiro bat and decided he would use both, but for different purposes: the Itoi bat for games, where immediate results were needed, and the Ichiro bat for practices, where he could work on honing his swing.

The Tigers are interested in a reunion with Orix's Kei Igawa.  Igawa apparently is open to returning to Hanshin.  The Buffaloes may listen to offers.  If the Tigers pull off a deal for Igawa, it could be a money trade.

Motonobu Tanishige is a little worried about getting hurt this season, now that he is a player/manager.  He will not have the luxury of taking his time with rehab, especially when the team is on the road.  It is one of the reasons why he is working particularly hard this off-season to make sure he is fully prepared for the upcoming season.

Hiromitsu Ochiai visited Nagoya Stadium on Tuesday and ended up spending about 100 minutes with Yusuke Matsui.  There were some questions about whether or not what he did might go against the baseball rules (section 173), but since neither party filed any complaints, since the advice was not forced, since Ochiai is not technically a coach, and since none of the organizations filed complaints, it is not considered a major issue at the moment.

The Dragons informed the NPB and the JPBPA of the incident on Wednesday.  They are planning to provide an explanation of what happened during an upcoming executive committee meeting on the 20th.  They are also willing to request that all personnel refrain from working with players in December and January if it means avoiding future misunderstandings.

Yokohama Bay Stars

Daisuke Miura, Hiroshi Kobayashi, and Kazuki Mishima worked out in Atsugi, Kanagawa today.  Workouts began at 8:00am and started with a hike up Mount Hakusan (284 meters).

Mishima is working on a new curve he learned how to throw from Daisue Miura.

"I want to practice the pitch so that I can use it next season.  [Miura] started helping me with it during the season, but there are fewer people during off-season training sessions.  Once I get the pitch down, I would like to credit Miura with it," Mishima said.

The Swallows held a staff meeting today to discuss player assignments for spring camp.  Thirty-eight players (twenty pitchers and eighteen position players) will likely be assigned to Ichi-gun spring camp.  Preliminary assignments were made, but nothing will be finalized until the 22nd.  Decisions on borderline players (including those coming back from injuries), like Yoshinori Sato and Shohei Tateyama, will not be made until the last minute.
