[1/15/2014] Hanshin Tigers News and Notes

The Tigers held a press conference on Wednesday at their offices in Nishinomiya, Hyogo to introduce Kazunari Tsuruoka.  He was assigned the number forty.

Kazuya Takamiya's uniform number will change from forty to thirty-four.

Shintaro Fujinami threw thirty-five pitches to a standing catcher in the bullpen at Naruohama on Wednesday.  It was his first session of the year.

According to Nikkan Sports, it was thirty-four pitches, all fastballs, to a half-squatting catcher.

Tsuyoshi NIshiokaYamato, and Takashi Toritani will likely be one, two, and three in the order this season.  However, Yutaka Wada may give Toritani a look in the one or two hole during exhibition play.

Ryoma Matsuda tossed twenty-five pitches in the bullpen to a half-squatting catcher on Tuesday.  He also mixed in some breaking pitches, including a curve and two kinds of sliders (fast and slow).  It was his second session of the year (his first came on the 11th).

There are rumblings that the Tigers may have purposely left the number thirty-one open because they might be planning to add Masayuki Kakefu to the coaching staff at some point this season.  As of now, he is a member of the front office and does not get a number.

The more or less official line on the number is that they are keeping it open for a player that deserves it.
