Players will no longer be allowed to chew gum during games this season.  The ban has already been confirmed among the manager and coaches.  Players will be informed of the decision during a team meeting on the 31st.

Gum may have beneficial properties, like improving concentration and helping with relaxation, but the organization is concerned about its image, particularly the one fans see on television.  This also ties into the Giants celebrating their eightieth anniversary this year and wanting to emphasize a line in their charter that says they should always be a team of gentleman.

Kosuke Fukudome dropped five kilograms this off-season.  He went on a four-day liquid fast after the season, dropped the weight, and has so far managed to keep it off.  He also consulted with experts and added more fermented foods (like cheese) to his diet.

Development coordinator Masayuki Kakefu knows the Yomiuri Giants have a solid team this year, but he also believes that the Tigers have the better farm system and could make a strong push if the young players step up.  And while he was all about motivating young players with praise during fall camp, he plans to take a tougher approach during spring camp because there will be more at stake.

For Osera, it was his second bullpen since the start of draft class training camp.  He threw fifty pitches (including breaks balls) to a standing catcher.

Kuri threw fifty pitches (including breaking balls) to a standing catcher.  It was his first session.
