The foreign players arrived in Okinawa today.  Hector Luna told reporters his left knee was better and that he spent time strengthening it during the off-season.

Pitching coach Yui Tomori is thinking about giving 2nd round draft pick Katsuki Matayoshi and 5th round draft pick Daisuke Sobue a look as starters during spring camp.  The two caught Tomori's eye because they throw with slightly unorthodox motions.  As candidates for the starting rotation, they will be doing a lot of throwing ad running during spring camp.

Tomori is also planning to consider every pitcher, other than Hitoki Iwase, a candidate for the starting rotation because they need arms.  He will probably eliminate candidates early on by checking to see how well they handle practice menus that include a lot of running and throwing.

Tomori watched pitchers toss bullpen sessions today and told reporters Matayoshi and Tatsuro Hamada looked especially good.

Michihiro Ogasawara gave each member of the Ichi-gun staff a case of Orion Beer.  The Ichi-gun staff is made up of about thirty people.  They include batting practice pitchers, bullpen catchers, equipment personnel, and public relations officers.

Yakult Swallows

Yoshinori Sato threw twenty-eight pitches to a standing catcher on Monday.  Junji Ogawa watched the session and was impressed with his progress, but avoided saying too much because he did not want to apply any unnecessary pressure with expectations.

Yoshinori tossed eight bullpen sessions while working out for about two weeks in Okinawa.  He threw as many as seventy-four pitches in one session.  He focused on his lower body when throwing.

Wladimir Balentien arrived at Narita Airport today.  He is scheduled to appear at a press conference at the team offices on Wednesday.  He will then head to Okinawa with the rest of the team on the 30th.

Hopefully, Blanco will lose an additional 5-7 kg to meet his goal of losing 10 kg from last year. I knew he wasn’t 102 kg per the NPB website. He was HUGE last year and I wonder how much his second half dropoff was due to the extra weight he was carrying.
