  • Kan Otake - Miyazaki bullpen; twenty to standing catcher, twenty-five pitches to squatting catcher

January 28

  • Toshiya Sugiuchi - Miyazaki bullpen, seven to standing catcher, twenty-two to a squatting catcher
  • Tetsuya Utsumi - Miyazaki bullpen; thirty-two to standing catcher; fastball, slider, change-up
  • Tomoyuki Sugano - Miyazaki bullpen; forty-five pitches
  • Eleven of sixteen pitchers attending pre-spring camp workouts in Miyazaki tossed bullpen sessions on Tuesday

Jose Lopez arrived at Narita Airport on Wednesday.  He told reporters he started his training during the first week in December and was at about eighty percent (he had some problems with his left side last season and took things a little slow during the winter).  He has not taken any strong swings yet.

Hayato Sakamoto, Hirokazu Ibata, Yasuyuki Kataoka, Daisuke Fujimura were in the same group during fielding practice on Tuesday.  These four, including a couple others, will be competing for the middle infield jobs.

Shinnosuke Abe is testing a new pair of cleats from Asics that is lighter and more flexible.  They are designed to relieve some of the strain on the foot and legs that comes with being a catcher.

The media learned on Tuesday that the Giants will be signing a service agreement with Tomohiro Nioka.  He will essentially be a roving international scout based out of Japan (he will travel when necessary).

Former Yomiuri Giant and Toei Flyer outfielder Kazuhiko Sakazaki died of stomach cancer in a hospital in Toyonaka at 1:40am on the 28th.  He was seventy-six.
