The New York Mets signed former Chunichi Dragon Matt Clark to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training.  From MLB.com's Paul Casella:

The Mets on Friday signed first baseman Matt Clark to a Minor League contract with an invitation to big league Spring Training.

Clark, who also has experience as an outfielder, spent five seasons in the Padres organization from 2008-12 before taking his game to Japan last season. The left-handed hitter flashed his power potential in Japan, connecting for 25 home runs over 132 games with Chunichi Dragons, while also posting a .238 average and driving in 70 runs.

Shunsuke Watanabe worked out in Yokohama today.  He threw about 130 pitches in the bullpen.  He has also been working on making his delivery more efficient by using a less pronounced leg kick.

Watanabe is planning to head to Florida on the 8th.

Was Clark unhappy in Japan? I am still curious why no one in NPB offered someone who had 25 HRs? Goodness, virtually any team in the PL could use a DH-type (except maybe Softbank). Rakuten (my team) could have used Clark as a DH and have Jones in the OF. That way they could have had Youkillis/Jones/Clark as the 3/4/5 hitters (or have Ginji as a #3 and push those guys to 4/5/6).

I wonder if it had anything to do with his medication. I think he had to get a new prescription and maybe it wasn’t working well or had bad side-effects. Or maybe that whole process left a bad impression and he just didn’t want to go through it again.
