  • Matt Murton - sixty-nine swings, none over the fence
  • Kosuke Fukudome - sixty-one swings, sixteen over the fence

Bullpen Sessions / Batting Practice

February 1

  • Shintaro Fujinami - forty-nine pitches to squatting catcher; all pitches including slider, cutter, fork, change-up, two-seamer.
  • 1st round draft pick Yuta Iwasada - ? to standing catcher, fourteen to squatting catcher; including cuve and slider; Takeshi Hidaka caught the session
  • 6th round draft pick Suguru Iwazaki - fifty-five to a squatting catcher; including breaking pitches like sinker; Shinya Azuhata caught the session

Kochi camp began at 6:25am on Saturday morning.  Thirteen players, including Fumiya Hojo and Shinta Hifumi, attended the early morning session.

Players swung a special red bat back and forth for about fifteen minutes before swinging a regular bat for roughly twenty-five minutes.

Seung Hwan Oh took some batting practice on Saturday for the first time since he was in high school.  Oh could toss his first bullpen session on the 7th.

Takashi Toritani and Naoto Nishida took fielding practice at short on Saturday.  Nishida stayed back after general workouts for extra fielding practice.

2nd round draft pick Shintaro Yokota missed the first day of Aki camp on Saturday with a fever.  He rested at the team hotel.  The Tigers do not think it is the flu.

Shintaro Fujinami added two kilograms to his frame this off-season and pushed his weight to ninety kilograms.  He will continue to increase his weight little by little over the next five years. ... Pitching Coach Kiyooki Nakanishi is not planning to place any pitch count limits on Fujinami during spring camp, but will likely place limits on the number of bullpen sessions he throws during each block of spring camp. ... Fujinami's workouts on Saturday included fielding practice, running, base-running.

Ni-gun manager Katsuo Hirata's spring camp slogan is "Go get it!"  He wants players to be aggressive and take the bull by the horns.

Development Coach Masayuki Kakefu did not pack any regular street clothes for spring camp.  All he has is training wear.

Yutaka Wada is moving away from giving Okinawa and Kochi camps Ichi-gun and Ni-gun labels.  Kakefu feels the Ichi-gun and Ni-gun labels might actually help younger players by providing them with a more concrete goal.

Kakefu tossed batting practice to Hojo (sixty-four pitches) on Saturday.  He received a nice round of applause from the fans when he took the mound.

The Tigers have given players about 100 to 500 baseball cards to hand out to fans when they do not have enough time to stop and sign autographs.

The Tigers are planning to conduct random physical fitness tests during spring camp.  They will also be using a Keiser Functional Trainer (about 1.5 million yen).

The cheerleading team began their "training camp" on Saturday in Osaka.  Workouts lasted about four hours.  They are scheduled to make their debut during a game against Chunichi at Kyocera Dome on April 1.
