A number of players were at different positions during fielding practice on Friday.  Hayato Sakamoto played third and Shuichi Murata and Hirokazu Ibata were at second.  Yasuyuki Kataoka played short.

Hideki Matsui threw 147 batting practice pitches to Shinnosuke Abe on Saturday.  After the session, Abe walked to the mound and Matsui started taking some practice swings, but nothing happened.

"He said no because he was not ready yet," Abe said to reporters later on.

Matsui told reporters he thought his time as special instructor this year would most likely end without him doing any hitting in public.

Matsui threw 106 batting practice pitches to Takayuki Terauchi on Friday. ... If Matsui takes batting practice in public, it could happen when Shigeo Nagashima is visiting camp (11th and 12th).

Sponichi seems to think Matsui could take some batting practice in public as early as the 9th.  He may have also hit fifty to sixty baseballs during a private soft-toss batting practice session on Friday.

NPB Commissioner Katsuhiko Kumazaki is looking forward to the possibility of working with Matsui in the future on projects to help improve Samurai Japan and to help promote baseball.
