New York Yankees

  • Masahiro Tanaka packed two practice gloves for spring training: one made by Asics and the other by Mizuno. Tanaka has been using the Mizuno glove (clover pattern in the webbing) and may be avoiding the Asics glove because it is multi-colored (themed after Momoiro Clover Z). He has yet to decide which manufacturer he wants to go with this year. He has already decided on Asics for his cleats. Source: ZakZak 3/6/2014

Texas Rangers

  • Yu Darvish is scheduled to make his next appearance on the 10th against the Reds. Source: Sanspo 3/6/2014

Masahiro Tanaka's interactions with the media.

Sanspo, from March 5.

You will be making your first MLB start on the 6th against the Phillies.

It will be different from my last outing [since I entered the game out of the bullpen]. It will be the same opponent, but it should be a good experience because I think I will be facing their regular players. I want to make sure I make my pitches.

You will be pitching on four days of rest.

It will only be two innings, so I don't think there will be any physical or emotional problems to deal with. It's just a matter of pitching well and shutting down the opposition.

Will you approach the game differently since the opposition will most likely include their regular players?

Of course.

Are you looking forward to facing the Phillies?

This goes for any team: I want to avoid allowing their line-up to function by pitching well and fragmenting their flow.

Sanspo from March 4.

What are you working on for your next outing?

I just want to hold the opposition down. Of course, things will be different than practices.

Is there something you want to try out?

No. I think my pitches are basically set so it's now about facing hitters. I have to figure out how I want to approach things by watching and experiencing what it's like to face hitters and situations.

Are you looking forward to facing the Phillies' Ryan Howard?

Well, things will be different since I will be starting the game and getting more opportunities to face the regular players. I want to enjoy that.

Will you try to keep your pitch count down?

Of course. I want to keep things simple. It wouldn't hurt to throw fewer pitches in an inning. The last time I pitched, I felt I could get away with throwing a little less.

So you will keep your pitch count low while allowing the catcher to lead you?

I don't know the hitters. As time goes on, there will be meeting and I will learn more... Hopefully a mutual understanding will develop by then.
