Yomiuri Giants

  • Shinnosuke Abe hit a home run during Friday's exhibition game against Orix.  It was his first exhibition game home run since March 20, 2010 (vs Yokohama at Tokyo Dome).  Source: Daily Sports 3/8/2014
  • Taishi Ota was yanked immediately after he struck out looking with the bases loaded and two out in the 1st inning of Friday's exhibition game against Orix.  The coaches were not pleased with his at bat -- they wanted him to be more aggressive and did not like the fact that he struck out looking.  Source: Sponichi 3/8/2014, Nikkan Sports 3/8/2014
  • Hisayoshi Chono broke three bats during Wednesday's game against the Nippon Ham Fighters.  Chono uses bats made of Japanese ash (Aodamo).  One bat manufacturer told reporters they were not sure if there would be enough trees to last the next five years since bats can only be made of Japanese ash that have been around for sixty or seventy years.  Source: ZakZak 3/8/2014

Hanshin Tigers

  • Akihito Fujii and Takashi Shimizu will likely make the opening day roster as catchers.  Kazunari Tsuruoka and 4th round draft pick Ryutaro Umeno will likely compete for the remaining spot.  Source: ZakZak 3/8/2014
  • Team Owner Shinya Sakai watched Friday's exhibition game against the Chiba Lotte Marines.  Source: Sanspo 3/8/2014
  • The Tigers went 0-4-1 in their first five exhibition games.  It was the first time they started exhibition play with a four-game losing streak since 1983.  The five game winless start is also the worst since the team began the 1980 exhibition season 0-5-2.  Source: Daily Sports 3/8/2014
  • Seung Hwan Oh will not pitch in either of the games the team plays against the Yomiuri Giants on March 9 and 10.  6th round draft pick Suguru Iwazaki is slated to start Monday's game against the Giants.  Atsushi Nomi will start a Kyoiku League game against Chunichi on the same day.  Source: Sanspo 3/8/2014
  • Kazuhito Futagami started a Kyoiku League game against Chunichi on Saturday.  He tossed five shutout innings while allowing one hit.  He struck out six.  Source: Nikkan Sports 3/8/2014

Hiroshima Carp

  • Yuya Fukui threw forty-five pitches in the bullpen on Friday. ... The first four spots in the starting rotation will likely go to Kenta MaedaBryan Bullington, Yusuke Nomura, and 1st round draft pick Daichi Osera.  The final two spots will probably come down to Fukui, Keisuke Imai, Jumpei Shinoda, and 2nd round draft pick Allen Kuri.  Source: Daily Sports 3/8/2014
  • Maeda will pitch in Sunday's game against the Yakult Swallows.  He plans to test his splitter and will also begin throwing sliders.  He will go three to four innings.  He threw about thirty pitches in the bullpen on Friday.  Source: Daily Sports 3/8/2014, Nikkan Sports 3/8/2014 ...
