Yomiuri Giants

  • Tomoyuki Sugano could get the season opener on March 28 against Hanshin at Tokyo Dome with Tetsuya Utsumi getting the road opener on April 1 against Yokohama at Yokohama.  Source: Nikkan Sports 3/10/2014
  • Yuki Koyama is scheduled to pitch in a Kyoiku League game against Yokohama on Tuesday.  He is expected to pitch two to three innings.  Source: Nikkan Sports 3/10/2014

Hanshin Tigers

  • The Tigers dropped their seventh straight exhibition game  (T, L, L, L, L, L, L, L) on Monday.  They have not lost seven exhibition games in a row since 2009.  This was also the first time they started the exhibition game season with no victories and seven consecutive losses.  Source: Daily Sports 3/10/2014
  • 4th round draft pick Ryutaro Umeno could become the first rookie catcher in franchise history to make the opening day starting line-up since the start of the draft.  If he makes it into the game as a pinch-hitter, it will be a first since Koichi Tabuchi on April 12, 1969.  The last rookie catcher in the NPB to make the opening day starting line-up was Ginjiro Sumitani for Seibu on March 25, 2006.  The last rookie catcher in the Central League to make the opening day starting line-up was Shinnosuke Abe for Yomiuri on March 30, 2001.  Source: Nikkan Sports 3/10/2014
