Yomiuri Giants

  • When Tatsunori Hara pulled Chris Seddon in the 3rd inning on Wednesday's game against Yakult, he also took out Shinnosuke Abe.  Hara did not want to remove Abe, but felt he had to if he wanted to win -- he replaced Seddon with catcher Seiji Kobayashi and Abe with pitcher Shoki Kasahara.   • Tomoyuki Sugano beat the Yakult Swallows on Tuesday and joined Yasuhiko Kawamura (1963) as the only pitchers in Central League history to record victories against every CL opponent before the end of April without any losses. Source: Nikkan Sports 4/30/2014

Hanshin Tigers

  • Randy Messenger tossed a 1-0 shutout on Tuesday.  He is the first foreign Hanshin pitcher in to toss a 1-0 shutout since Chien-Fu Kuo Lee on April 17, 1996.  The shutout victory was Messenger's sixth over his career, second most by a foreign pitcher in franchise history (Gene Bacque is in first with twenty-two).  It was also Messenger's third shutout victory on five days of rest.  The other two: September 5, 2012 and September 23, 2013.   • Kosuke Fukudome became the ninety-ninth player in NPB history to reach the 200 home run milestone on Tuesday.  He recorded his first career home run on April 16, 1999. Source: Sponichi 4/30/2014
  • Takashi Toritani set a new franchise record for runs scored in one month when he came around to score for the thirtieth time on Wednesday. Source: Nikkan Sports 4/30/2014
  • The Tigers picked up their seventeenth victory in April on Tuesday.  That broke the previous franchise high of sixteen, set in 2008, for wins in the month of April.  The general franchise high for any given month is nineteen, set in August 1964 and August 1968. The Tigers won their tenth straight at Koshien on Wednesday.  It was their first ten-game winning streak at Koshien since 2003 (May 17-June 5).  They also ended April with eighteen victories.  The last time they won eighteen games in one month was in May 2003.
