Rakuten Eagles

  • John Bowker hit a home run during a Ni-gun game against Lotte on Thursday.  It was his first trip to the plate (second pitch) since joining the Eagles' organization. Source: Nikkan Sports 5/8/2014
  • 1st round draft pick Yuki Matsui is scheduled to make an appearance in relief during a Ni-gun game against Yakult on the 10th. Source: Nikkan Sports 5/8/2014
  • If Kevin Youkilis does not return to the Eagles, it could be because he lost his motivation after struggling to adjust to the new pitchers and the different strike zones in Japan. Source: ZakZak 5/8/2014

Seibu Lions

  • Ernesto Mejia could play in a Ni-gun practice game against JR Hokkaido on the 13th (first base batting clean-up). Source: Daily Sports 5/8/2014

Softbank Hawks

  • Twenty of Toru Hosokawa's seventy-nine home runs have come on days Kazuyuki Hoashi pitched (Seibu and Softbank). ... Hosokawa asked Jason Standridge to pick his next bat from a group of two, in jest and as a way to mix things up for himself. Source: Nikkan Sports 5/8/2014

Orix Buffaloes

  • Yoshihiko Miyauchi will be stepping down as Orix board chairman and chief executive officer, pending approval during a shareholders meeting on June 24.  He will take on a new position as senior chairman.  He will also retain his title as owner of the Buffaloes.  Co-CEO Makoto Inoue will take over as sole CEO.  A new board chairman will not be named.  Source: Sponichi 5/8/2014

If Youk lost motivation after around 80 at-bats, he had even less in the tank than I had thought. What I want to know is how NPB works with regard to these types of situations. Is Youkilis owed for the entire contract or is there an opt-out for Rakuten (similar to what happened with Brad Penny)? I really had a bad feeling about the Youkilis signing and nothing has made me change my mind.

The funny thing is the Bowker signing could end up being a much better (and cheaper) signing in the long run. He was a pretty decent player last year and since he’s been around for a bit he knows what to expect.

Not surprised at all by this about Youklis, unfortunately.
