[5/12/2014] NPB to establish two subcommittees, Inter-league season in two parts

The NPB held a board meeting in Tokyo on Monday.  Among the issues discussed:

  • Approval on the establishment of the subcommittee to oversee the preparation for the Samurai Japan company and the subcommittee to improve and strengthen the NPB.
    • NPB Commissioner Katsuhiko Kumazaki will be an adviser on both subcommittees.
    • Yomiuri Giants' official Toshikazu Yamaguchi will head the subcommittee for Samurai Japan.  Team representatives from Hanshin, Softbank, and Orix will also be a part of the subcommittee.
    • NPB Secretary General Atsushi Ihara will head the NPB subcommittee.  Central and Pacific League chairmen will also be a part of the subcommittee.
  • The NPB, the twelve teams, and players will coordinate efforts to promote baseball by visiting elementary schools.

The Inter-league season could be split into two sections next year (one in May and the other between August and September).  The NPB has been discussing changes to the format out of concern that the concept might be growing a little old.  The decision to swap the designated hitter rule this year is a part of the plan to give fans a new way to enjoy the season.

The NPB announced the following scoring change on May 9:

Game: April 15, Chiba Lotte Marines vs Seibu Lions at Omiya

Changes:

  • Kazuhisa Makita's earned runs will change from one to two
  • Seibu's earned runs will change from one to two.
