Yomiuri Giants

  • Yasuyuki Kataoka became the 276th player in NPB history to reach the 1,000-hit milestone during Thursday's game against Yakult.  The hit came in his at bat in the 7th inning against Ryohei Kiya. Source: Sponichi 5/15/2014
  • A Giants' pitcher gave up a grand slam on Wednesday (Yakult's Wladimir Balentien off Nobutaka Imamura) for the first time since July 18, 2010 (Yokohama's Brett Harper of Marc Kroon). Source: Nikkan Sports 5/15/2014
  • The Giants may have been hoping Nobutaka Imamura could win a spot in the starting rotation so they could go with three foreign position players (Jose Lopez, Leslie Anderson, and Frederich Cepeda) instead of two during Inter-league play.  Simply put, the coaches might be looking for a Japanese starter they can use over Chris Seddon so they can keep all their foreign position players on the active roster. • Cepeda batted clean-up in his Ichi-gun debut on Thursday.  For those keeping score, that made him the eightieth clean-up hitter in franchise history. Source: Sponichi 5/15/2014

Hanshin Tigers

  • Yamato recorded his first career home run in his 1,172nd trip to the plate.  There are three other active players that are still looking for their first home runs with more plate appearances than Yamato (through Wednesday): Yoshifumi Okada (1,680), Tetsuya Matsumoto (1,282), and Masahiro Yamamoto (1,206). Hiroshima Carp

Yakult Swallows

  • Wladimir Balentien has hit three home runs off Yomiuri's Nobutaka Imamura this season.  Balentien has hit three or more home runs off one pitcher in a season only three other times: three off Yokohama's Kota Suda in 2011; four off Hiroshima Kan Otake in 2013; and three off Yokohama's Teruaki Yoshikawa in 2013.
