Yomiuri Giants

  • Frederich Cepeda is the first foreign player in franchise history to bat clean-up in his first career NPB game.  Reggie Smith batted clean-up for the Giants in his first year in Japan in 1983, but not until his fifth game. ... The pitchers gave up ten or more runs to the Yakult Swallows in back-to-back games on Wednesday and Thursday.  It was a first since 2003 on June 11 and 12. Source: Sponichi 5/16/2014 ... Other than Cepeda, Fujio Nagasawa (1936 summer), Hiromitsu Ochiai (1994), Kazuhiro Kiyohara (1997), and Seung-Yeop Lee (2006) also batted clean-up in their first games with Yomiuri, but only Nagasawa and Cepeda did it without first having played for another NPB team. Hanshin Tigers

  • Shintaro Fujinami could be the Inter-league opening day starter.  Minoru Iwata was a possibility as well, but he was taken off the active roster on Thursday.  His first Inter-league start could come on the 25th against Lotte. Source: Sponichi 5/16/2014

  • For the time being, Seung Hwan Oh will not pitch more than an inning, unless absolutely necessary. Source: Nikkan Sports 5/16/2014 ...   • Mauro Gomez returned to Osaka from Yonago by train (over three hours) on Thursday instead of plane (about forty minutes) because he did not want to fly.  He traveled with the team interpreter. Source: Sanspo 5/16/2014

Hiroshima Carp

Yokohama Bay Stars

  • Kiyoshi Nakahata is planning to insert Yulieski Gourriel into the starting line-up at second base batting third after a couple days of practice, unless he asks to play a couple of games at Ni-gun.  Gourriel will be coming to Japan with wife and father. Source: Nikkan Sports 5/16/2014

Yakult Swallows

  • The Swallows recorded a three-game series sweep over the Yomiuri Giants on Thursday.  They banged out fifteen or more hits in each of the three games (sixteen, fifteen, and seventeen hits).  For the Swallows, it was their first three-game series sweep of the season; first three-game series sweep of the Yomiuri Giants since April 26-28, 2013; and first three-game series sweep of the Yomiuri Giants at Tokyo Dome since September 13-15, 1997.  They notched fifteen or more hits in three consecutive games for the seventh time in franchise history.  They also collected fifteen or more hits in three consecutive games during a three-game series for the second time in franchise history.  The first time was against Yokohama between August 6-8, 2010 (twenty-two, seventeen, and sixteen hits).
