Yomiuri Giants

  • Frederich Cepeda used a bat on Friday that weighed 910 grams, ten grams more than the bat he used the previous day. Source: Sponichi 5/17/2014
  • Tetsuya Utsumi recorded his fourth loss of the season on Friday.  He is now 0-4 in eight starts this year.  The four-game losing streak ties a career high last set in July-August 2010.  The four losses to start a season set a career high.  The eight starts without a victory also set a new career high (three previous high of seven starts was set in 2009).  The last Yomiuri pitcher to start the season without any victories in eights or more starts was Masumi Kuwata in 2005 (0-7 in twelve starts).   • Hirokazu Shiranita started a Ni-gun game against Orix on Saturday.  He gave up a run on two hits over seven innings of work.  The one run came on a solo home run to Kyo Okunami in the 2nd inning. Source: Nikkan Sports 5/17/2014

Hiroshima Carp

  • 1st round draft pick Daichi Osera extended his personal winning streak to five games on Friday.  He is the sixth Hiroshima rookie to win five or more in a row.  The other five: Hiroshi Nagadomi (eight in 1986), Tsunemi Tsuda (seven in 1982), Kiyoshi Oishi (five in 1959), Shinji Sasaoka (five in 1990), and Yusuke Nomura (five in 2012).  Of the six, Osera and Nagadomi are the only ones that managed to win five in five games (Nagadomi won six in six games).   • Nomura started a Ni-gun game against Chunichi on Friday.  He pitched eight innings and allowed one run on six hits.  He threw 114 pitches and walked none. Source: Daily Sports 5/17/2014

  • Toshiya Okada was taken off the active roster on Saturday to work through some issues at Ni-gun.  Okada gave up seven runs, five earned, against the Yakult Swallows on Friday and suffered his sixth loss of the season. Source: Nikkan Sports 5/17/2014

  • Shoichi Ino is the first pitcher in franchise history to win six games before the end of May since Kazuo Fukudome won six in 1999. Source: Nikkan Sports 5/17/2014 ...   • The Swallows recorded ten or more hits in four straight games, beginning on the 13th (sixteen, fifteen, seventeen, ten).  The last time they hit ten or more in four straight was when they did it in five straight last year between September 15 and 21 (fifteen, eleven, ten, twelve, thirteen). ... The Swallows have reached ten or more hits in twenty-two of their forty-one games (through Friday).  The last time they accomplished a similar feat was in 2004 (twenty-two in forty games).
