Yomiuri Giants

  • Tomoyuki Sugano recorded his twentieth career victory on Saturday.  He joined Tsuneo Horiuchi, Koji Uehara, and Tetsuya Yamaguchi as the only Yomiuri pitchers since the start of the draft to reach twenty wins without ever going on a losing streak.   • Frederich Cepeda is the twenty-third foreign player in franchise history to bat clean-up.  He became the seventeenth foreign player in franchise history to hit a home run while batting clean-up and the first foreign player in franchise history to record his first career home run while batting clean-up. Cepeda made a couple of adjustments on Saturday: he opened up his stance a little because he was getting a lot of inside pitches; he went back to his 900 gram bat because he valued swing speed/bat control over power when facing Hiroshima Kenta Maeda. Hanshin Tigers

  • Matt Murton moved into sole possession of first on the franchise's all-time hit list for foreign players with 744.  The hit came in Sunday's game against the Yokohama Bay Stars -- bottom of the 8th off Jorge Sosa. Source: Sponichi 5/18/2014 ... Murton's ideal weight is 105 kilograms.  When he got sick (stomach problems that began around the 11th), his weight dropped to about 100 kilograms.  He is back to about 102 now.  He told reporters on Saturday he was at about eighty percent. Chunichi Dragons

  • Shinji Iwata struck out the side with nine pitches in the 8th inning of Sunday's game against the Yakult Swallows.  He became the tenth pitcher in the Central League to accomplish the feat, first since Hanshin's Masashi Sajikihara on September 6, 2005, and the fifteenth pitcher in the NPB, first since Nippon Ham's Brian Wolf in 2011.
