Yomiuri Giants

  • Toshiya Sugiuchi threw what may have looked like an eephus pitch to Ginjiro Sumitani in the 7th inning of Tuesday's game against Seibu Lions, but it was actually a mistake pitch that should never have happened.  With a runner on first and two out, catcher Shinnosuke Abe called for a pick-off.  Sugiuchi started his motion toward home plate before he realized he misread Abe's sign.  He was about to throw a fastball, but tried his best to slow things down he thought Abe would never be able to catch a fastball (he would have been called for a balk if he stopped his motion).  Sumitani still swung the bat and managed to make contact.  It ended up being a fly out to center. • Hayato Sakamoto became the twenty-third player in franchise history to reach the 1,000-hit milestone on Tuesday, first since Shinnosuke Abe in 2009.  1,000 hits in 909 games is fifth quickest in franchise history.  Sakamoto tied Yasumitsu Toyoda and Ichiro Suzuki for third youngest in NPB history to reach the milestone at twenty-five years and five months.  A breakdown by day shows Sakamoto was quickest: Sakamoto at twenty-five years and 157 days; Toyoda at twenty-five years and 168 days; and Ichiro at twenty-five years and 180 days. Hanshin Tigers

  • Shintaro Fujinami gave up six runs (three earned) in two innings of work on Tuesday.  Pitching coach Kiyooki Nakanishi wants to see better results.  If Fujinami has another bad start (likely to come on the 26th against Lotte at Koshien), Nakanishi might try to drop him from the starting rotation for at least one turn to give him time to make adjustments.  Ni-gun could also be a possibility. Yokohama Bay Stars

  • Norihiro Nakamura has not been able to play in many games at Ni-gun because of pain in his right elbow.  He may be running out of time to prove himself -- Tony Blanco recently returned to the active roster and Yulieski Gourriel is expected to join the team soon. Source: Tokyo Sports 5/21/2014

  • According to a ZakZak report, Yomiuri's Tatsunori Hara may have preferred pitching assistance, but Cuba wanted the first player they sent to Japan to be someone with a solid history and a certain level of class and conduct.  Frederich Cepeda happened to be that player.  Yokohama was always interested in Yulieski Gourriel and got the player they wanted.  Contracts with both players were negotiated through the Baseball Federation of Cuba and are only for this year.  Nothing is guaranteed past this season and teams are not allowed to negotiate extensions with players directly.
