Yomiuri Giants

  • 3rd round draft pick Kazuto Taguchi and 5th round draft pick Kentaro Taira made their Ni-gun debuts during an exhibition game against the Niigata Albirex Baseball Club (BC League) at Giants Stadium on Monday. ... Taguchi entered the game in the 5th and tossed a shutout inning in relief.  He threw twenty-one pitches, topped out at 143km/h, walked on, and struck out two. ...   • Shuichi Murata hit the fiftieth Inter-league home run of his career on Sunday.  Murata and Seibu's Takeya Nakamura (fifty-seven) are the only players in NPB history to hit fifty Inter-league home runs. ...   • Through Sunday, the Arai brothers made the starting line-up in the same game three times this year.  In those three games: T. Arai went 4-for-12 with three RBI and Ryota Arai went 4-for-13 with one RBI. Source: Sanspo 6/9/2014
  • The Tigers scored nine runs in the 1st inning of their game against Softbank on Sunday.  It was the first time they scored nine runs in one inning since the 2nd inning of a game on October 5, 2010.  It was also just the second time they scored nine runs in the 1st inning, first since August 10, 1951.  They once scored twelve runs in the 1st inning on April 30, 1936 (before two-league format). Chunichi Dragons

  • Motonobu Tanishige told reporters he plans to take Daniel Cabrera out of the rotation for one start.  Cabrera will most likely be taken off the active roster.  He lost his start on Monday after giving up three runs (all earned) on five hits and four walks over 3.2 innings of work. Yokohama Bay Stars

  • Yulieski Gourriel is the first foreign player to record a modasho in his first game in his first year since Scott Seabol on March 28, 2008, and the sixth foreign player in franchise history to record a modasho in his first game in his first year, first since Jose Malave on April 3, 1998. Gourriel celebrated his thirtieth birthday on Monday.  The media presented him with a cake after practices.  This was the first time he celebrated a birthday overseas.
