Yomiuri Giants

  • The Giants extended their winning streak on Tuesday to seven games (the streak ended on Wednesday with a loss).  They joined Yakult and Orix as the only teams in NPB history to put together winning streaks of seven or more games during Inter-league play twice. ... Up until Tuesday, the Giants were riding of a five-game losing streak in games where their pitchers were tossed for throwing dangerous pitches.  The win on Tuesday, after Toshiya Sugiuchi was ejected for throwing a dangerous pitch to Orix's Keiichi Hirano in the 3rd, was their first since August 9, 2006. Hanshin Tigers

  • Shintaro Fujinami set career highs in strikeouts (thirteen) and pitches (136) during his start on Tuesday.  His previous high for strikeouts was ten, set earlier this year on May 13.  His previous high for pitches was 132, set on August 11, 2013.  His high school highs were higher: his high for strikeouts was fourteen and he once threw 148 pitches in 2012.   • Through the end of Tuesday: Starting pitchers recorded ten or more strikeouts in three consecutive games: Atsushi Nomi struck out ten on the 14th, Randy Messenger thirteen on the 15th, and Fujinami thirteen on the 17th.  The last team to field starters that recorded ten or more strikeouts in three consecutive games was Hiroshima between September 21 and 23, 1988: Yoshihisa Shiratake struck out fourteen, Kazuhisa Kawaguchi ten, and Yutaka Ono ten.  The last Hanshin team to field starters that recorded ten or more strikeouts in three consecutive games was in 1967 between May 25 and 28: Tomoo Wako struck out eleven, Gene Bacque ten, and Yutaka Enatsu eleven.
