Toshiya Sugiuchi became the twenty-second player in NPB history to reach the 2,000 strikeout milestone during Saturday's game against the Hanshin Tigers. The milestone strikeout came in the 6th against against Hiroki Uemoto. Sugiuchi also set a new speed record by striking out 2,000 in 1,930.2 innings pitched. Kazuhisa Ishii held the previous record at 1,967.2 innings.
On a side note: Sugiuchi ended up tossing a shutout against the Tigers. It was the team's first shutout since Hirokazu Sawamura threw one against Orix on June 13, 2013 and Sugiuchi's first since April 30, 2013 against Chunichi at Nagoya Dome (first at Tokyo Dome since May 30, 2013 against Rakuten).
