Yomiuri Giants

  • Battery coach Kosuke Yoshihara will be re-assigned to Ni-gun Ikusei coach, effective the start of the second-half of the season. Source: official announcement
  • Alfredo Despaigne may have been the Giants top choice, but they switched gears when they heard it might be a little more complicated to get him to Japan than Frederich Cepeda.  They also heard something about a falsified passport (later confirmed to be true) and wanted to avoid negative publicity in the press. Hanshin Tigers

  • The Tigers finished the first-half with winning records against all Central League teams other than the Chunichi Dragons: vs Yomiuri 7-5-0, vs Hiroshima 6-4-0, vs Yokohama 9-3-0, vs Yakult 7-4-0, and vs Chunichi 7-7-1.  They also finished the first-half in second place for the fifth time over the last ten years.   • Yoshinori Tateyama pitched in a Ni-gun game against Softbank on Wednesday.  He entered the game in the 4th with the bases loaded and two out and got Masayoshi Tsukada to fly out to right.  Tateyama is expected to join the Ichi-gun team for workouts during the All-Star break, but is also scheduled to pitch during a Ni-gun series against Chunichi that begins on the 26th.   • Former Tiger Tomoaki Kanemoto appeared on Nippon TV's Down Town DX and talked about the time he took and HBP off his left wrist on July 29, 2004 and suffered a fracture.  He was still in the middle of his consecutive innings streak (1,492 innings between July 21, 1999 and April 17, 2010) and was thinking about giving up when then Hanshin manager Akinobu Okada pushed him to play the next day. Hiroshima Carp

  • The Carp are heading into the All-Star break in third place with a 42-38-1 record.  This is the first time they reached the All-Star break in third place or better since 2012 (third place, 38-38-2); the first time they reached the break one or more games above .500 since 2002 (fourth place, 35-33-1); and the first time they reached the break in third place or better and one or more games above .500 since 1997 (second place, 40-37-0).
